About the place

The palace was built in 1872–1876 to a design by Budapest architect Ödön Lechner, who won a competition with 17 entries, and was finished by the local firm of Francisc Pekar. It has a U-shaped plan, neoclassical facades and a neo-Renaissance central block with a 54 m tower. The clock was brought from Switzerland in 1878; since Romania joined the EU it has played the Ode to Joy on the hour.

The building houses the City Hall and the county Prefecture. The main hall has stained-glass windows by Sever Frențiu showing the seasons and the months, which appeared on a set of stamps in 2026. The building is a listed monument (AR-II-m-B-00548). The interior has no visiting hours; the facade and the park in front can be seen any time.

Good to know

  • Listen to the clock on the hour: it plays the Ode to Joy.
  • In the evening the building is lit up; a good time for photos.
  • The interior only opens for events; watch the City Hall's announcements.
